Chapter 9

John McNab and the rest of the Cobras (a silly name if you ask me) are chasing Maniac and almost catch him when they suddenly stop at Hector Street.  Why did they stop there when they were so close to catching him?

  1. they stopped because they weren't supposed to cross on to the "black" side

  2. Yeah, TJ is right, and they were laughing because they thought he wouldn't last and he would get into fights and people wouldn't take him in.
    Run-on sentence...
    Question for Mr.Janow:
Is using the terms "black" and "white" to describe people's skin colors considered rude? How else can we say it?

  3. And yes, even though "Cobras" is supposed to be a cool gang name, it's lame if you ask me.

  6. TJ and Rotem thank you very much for your participation in this blog. I hope that you both remind your friends in class to be more active in using this.
-In response to your questions about skin color there really is no easy or simple answer. In the book Maniac Magee the author (Jerry Spinelli) refers to people's skin color as black and white, so it would seem that when we discuss the book that would be an ok way of describing skin color. On the other hand outside of this book people usually say "Africa-America" not black. I think as a class we should talk more about this.

  7. This is all true, there isn't really any other answer besides saying it was the border line across the city

  8. they stopped because they "couldnt cross the borderline" between east and west. and i also think the cobras is a silly name. y not something less tacky? :P

  11. The Cobra's didn't cross Hector Street because they themselves were scared of being beaten up bye the blacks. They laughed because they thought that Maniac wouldn't last and that he would get beaten up. They found that idea quite comical.

  12. That was a good question to ask. I think (just giving my opinon here) that since the author uses the terms "black" and "white" we should be allowed to use them when talking about the book. If a person feels uncomfortable with you using those terms then say "dark-colored" or "light-colored". If you now someone with a darker skin color don't talk about what they look like. WHO CARES?? I know I don't!!
